How to Choose Between a Gym and Personal Trainer

Written By Fitness 19

If you’re looking to get more from your exercise routine, a trainer may be just what you need. A gym trainer or personal trainer can help you gradually increase the intensity in your preferred method of exercise. However, finding a trustworthy gym trainer may be a little challenging.

Here’s what you need to look for in a gym or personal trainer.

Reputation

In order to identify the skills and expertise of a trainer, you have to look into their reputation. Regardless if it’s a gym trainer or personal trainer, their reputation is formed by the feedback and experiences of past clients. Research them and see what people have to say about them. Please remember that there is a high probability the trainer has a few negative reviews. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t qualified.

Don’t let one or two bad reviews stop you from going with them. However, if there’s more negative feedback than positive, it’s in your best interest to keep searching.

It’s also important to note that while they do have similarities, a gym trainer and personal trainer aren’t the same. A gym trainer is there is help you use fitness equipment properly to avoid injury. They are also available on an as-needed basis, like when you want to perfect your form or learn a new exercise. They are also employees of the gym and usually work with clients only in the gym.

A personal trainer is more focused on you as an individual. They create personalized fitness plans that are specific for your fitness level and desired goals. They also offer services outside a gym, which means you can train at home or even outdoors.

Certification

In order for someone to be qualified as a trainer, they must acquire the proper certification. There are numerous forms of certification trainers can get including certification from these organizations:

  • American Council on Exercise
  • National Academy of Sports Medicine
  • American College of Sports Medicine
  • International Sports Sciences Association

Most trainers these days have their own webpage dedicated to them. Their certification should be on the main page. It’s usually located in the top right or bottom right of the screen. If you can’t find any form of certification, reach out and ask for clarification.

Mutual Agreement

While having a good reputation and proper certification is ideal, it may not be enough. A trainer and trainee should always be on equal ground when it comes to exercise. For instance, if you’re someone who prefers to exercise outdoors or in your home, your trainer may not feel the same way. This can cause unnecessary tension and disconnect between the both of you. Try to find a trainer who is willing to work with your wants.

Affordable Pricing

Trainers, albeit gym or personal, are not free. They usually charge hourly rates or per packages. The price will depend on the trainer and level of certification as well. Some trainers may be willing to work out a deal if you’re on a budget. Also, don’t forget to budget around the cost of your trainer to ensure you’re not overspending. The last thing you want is to breach a contract or not be able to pay.

Maintaining a good training regimen is the best way to stay fit, both physically and psychologically. Hiring a trainer is an excellent choice when you’re ready to take your next step into the world of fitness.
