Strong calves are what help make your gams look great. So what are some of the best ways to build up those muscles located at the back bottom of your legs? There are a few go to calf toning exercises that you can do just about anytime and anywhere. An added bonus is they can be adapted depending on your fitness level. So what are you waiting for? Any time is a good time to tone your calves – including now.

Go for a walk

The simple act of walking engages your calves leading to leaner, toned muscles. Aim for 10,000 steps daily. If your goal is to lose weight while you tone up, add steps as you are able until you are taking 12,000 to 15,000 each day.

Super charge your walk by taking on hills outside. Inside, raise the incline on the treadmill for a minute or two every few minutes. Ready to do more? Start running. The action of springing forward coupled with alternate leg hopping that happens while running does wonders for calves.

Try double leg lifts

Standing with feet slightly apart and knees unlocked lift up onto the balls of both feet; return your heels to the floor and repeat. Try to do as many double leg lifts as you can in 60 seconds to start. As you build more strength you can do the lifts for two minutes and/or add ankle weights.

Don’t save double leg lifts just for exercise time. Do them throughout the day while you are washing dishes, standing in line or even talking on the phone. Exercise is for anytime.

Seated leg lifts

Again, with feet slightly apart lift your feet up to their balls. You should notice your thighs lifting from the chair; ramp up your lift by placing a weight or a heavy book on your thighs. Even small movements add up to calories burned and muscles toned. Try to do seated leg lifts a couple of times each hour at your desk or while watching television for faster results.

Take the stairs

Who has time to stand around on the escalator or waiting for the elevator? Use your time instead to tone your claves by taking the stairs. Challenge yourself by taking two at a time. Other options include step class. If you are new to step aerobics begin with a flat bench and increase the risers as you are able.

Lean legs look great any time of the year but you can’t get them without toned calves. Give your confidence and your fat burning power a boost by toning the muscles in your calves.
